Activities related to Safety, Operations and Infrastructure in Europe

IATA's activities related to safety, security, operations, air traffic management and airport development in Europe focus on responding to the needs of its Member airlines and industry partners.

Close relations are maintained with governments and the institutions of the European Union and other organisations in Europe (see column right).

Regional priorities

Safety

  • Monitor and contribute to the implementation of Eurocontrol safety enhancement action plans  (Runway Safety, Level Bust and Air-Ground Safety Communication) in accordance with IATA’s 6 Points Safety Programme.
  • Emphasise, at major airports, the use of English as the one common aviation language, the introduction of CPDLC (Controller/Pilot DataLink) to reduce VHF frequency congestion.
  • Participate to Eurocontrol SAFREP (SAFety REPorting) activities, including the finalisation of a data sharing agreement, incorporating STEADES membership, to facilitate trend analysis and focused, data driven approaches to safety enhancement initiatives.
  • Develop closer ties with EASA in view of future regulatory framework developments, namely though its ESSI activities.
  • Cooridinate intensive dialogue with Cypriot and Turkish authorities to reach an agreement on the implementation of operational solutions to alleviate safety concerns and strictly apply to ICAO SARPs.

Operations and Infrastructure

Ensure that Air Navigation Services and Airport Capacity meets Air Traffic Demand by fully observing environmental sustainability via:

  • Single European Sky (SES), which IATA helped develop.
  • SESAR, a project IATA is participating in, along with other European carriers and Airspace Users associations to represent  airline expectations for a seamless global air traffic management system.
  • Capacity development and implementation of related Eurocontrol programs DMEAN (Dynamic Management of the European Airspace Network), P-RNAV, Link 2000+, Mode S Elementary/Enhanced Surveillance and ADS-B, 8.33 kHz, Airspace Collaborative Decision Making (CDM), Aeronautical Information Services
  • ATM measures to minimise negative influence on the environment
  • Airport Airside Capacity Enhancement
  • Assessment of cost/benefits of ground surveillance system implementation at major airports (in combination with onboard moving maps)
  • Increased operational efficiency and capacity at airports, Airport Collaborative Decision Making (CDM)
  • ATM Capacity Enhancement Measures by ensuring that ATM capacity activities maintain en route delays at around 1 minute delay target by releasing latent capacity in the ATM system
  • European and Russian airspace improvements
